The Academy for Sustainable Futures

There are lots of opportunities to get involved with the Academy, from joining the Student Green Office to taking part in training and events.

Student Green Office

We've got a great Student Green Office, run by four paid Student Green Project Officers who work part-time with the Academy for Sustainable Futures alongside their studies to actively promote inclusive and green living at the University.

Look out for events, workshops, and pop-ups hosted on campus, and get tips on how to learn new skills, access free training, and help us build a more sustainable future for everyone.

Carbon Literacy Training

The Academy of Sustainable Futures is offering students free Carbon Literacy Training. Learn about the cost and impact of carbon dioxide and how to reduce emissions on an individual, community, and team basis. To find out more and book a place email carbonliteracytraining@canterbury.ac.uk

Sustainable food and drink

Join the reusable zero waste cup scheme to help reduce waste, and once a month look out for the Refillable Van, your local mobile zero-waste shop.

Green spaces

We have a whole collection of Wilder Campus spaces on our Canterbury Campus, including a wellbeing garden tucked behind the Johnson building, a heritage jubilee orchard in front of Ramsey and Powell, and a heritage hop garden. We also have several raised bed allotments across the campuses where students and staff can grow flowers, fruit, herbs, and vegetables together.

Work placements

Immerse yourself in sustainability with a short-term or summer placement working with the University’s Sustainability Team, either through your modules or on your own initiative. From project work and branding development, to campaign planning and more, there’s plenty to get involved in.

Academic support

If you or your tutor want to explore a sustainability project as part of your course, the Academy for Sustainable Futures Team has a wealth of resources available for staff and students to use and are happy to discuss your ideas and how they can support you.

Students’ Union

Being socially and environmentally sustainable is a key strategic commitment for our Students’ Union and you'll see Union-led events across the year that touch on core sustainability values, including inclusivity, accessibility, reducing waste, upcycling and reusing resources, and celebrating diversity.
